Use your commitment to fairness, kindness, collaboration and ambition to benefit the nursing and midwifery professions

Panel Members

The NMC wants to hear from candidates who can demonstrate the regulator’s values of fairness, kindness, collaboration and ambition; and who can meet competencies including professionalism and integrity, quality decision making, and a commitment to equality.

Legal Assessors

Legal Assessors are independent legal advisers to our practice committees.
They perform a critical role in ensuring panels act within the law, that they consult and apply NMC guidance appropriately, and explain their reasoning.

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in one of the two roles we are looking to appoint to: Panel Members (lay and registrant) for our practice committees, and Legal Assessors who support and advise our practice committees.

At the Nursing and Midwifery Council we have responsibility for ensuring that those on our register of nurses, nursing associates and midwives meet our professional standards.

On occasions, we need to investigate a concern about a nurse, midwife or nursing associate’s fitness to practise. In the most serious of cases, we might bring these concerns before a meeting or hearing of the fitness to practise committee.

Panels of the fitness to practise committee play a huge part in our role to protect the public and uphold public confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions.

Members of our practice committees are independent and work collaboratively to make decisions about professionals’ fitness to practise and what sanctions, if any, to apply in order to keep people safe.  They’re helped in their decision-making by independent Legal Assessors, who ensure panels act within the law, that they consult and apply NMC guidance appropriately, and explain their reasoning. Panel members and legal assessors are both employed as contractors.

For both roles we are looking for applications from a diverse range of individuals to ensure our panels and legal assessors are representative of the UK population, and for registrant panel members the professions we regulate.

Our values of kindness, fairness, collaboration and ambition are an integral part of how we perform our role when we work with colleagues, registrants, stakeholders and the public we serve. Successful applicants will be those who demonstrate our values and are able to work together to facilitate the panel reaching timely, logical, fair and balanced decisions.

We will provide induction and support, so even if you have not undertaken a similar role before, we will support you to make a positive impact in our hearings.

Thank you for your interest in working with us, and we look forward to receiving your application.
